In fact, they were Christian in some sense or other. You talk about Galileo, Kepler, Newton and so on. Kepler famously said “We're thinking God's thoughts after him.” So far from their belief in God hindering their science, it was the very motive that drove it. Because they believed in a creator, a rational spirit behind the universe, they thought that science was worth doing. And so they did it.
